What Is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to outside tools and data sources through a single, consistent method.

MCP gives an AI assistant a standard way to reach information and actions that live in other software, rather than depending on a separate custom setup for each one. It was introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 and has since been adopted more widely.

For a video platform, this means an assistant can read things like recordings, transcripts, and summaries through the same protocol other tools use.

For example, an assistant connected over MCP can pull the transcript of a recording and answer a question about what was said, without you opening the video.

How Does the Model Context Protocol Work?

MCP follows a client-server model.

  1. Expose – A server makes data or actions available, such as transcripts or recordings.
  2. Connect – An AI assistant acts as a client and links to that server.
  3. Request – The assistant asks for the specific resource or action it needs.
  4. Return – The server sends back the result in a standard format.
  5. Use – The assistant works the result into its response.

  3. Access – Let an assistant work with your data where it lives.
